Dominican Trip 2010

Who are we working with:

We will be working with Pastor Nino’s church which is called Iglesia Baputista Cristiama.  Pastor Robert Martino is the Youth Pastor at this church and is the Pastor that we will be working alongside.

What will we be doing:

We will be conducting Bible school at Colegio Belen on Monday through Friday.  We will be leading youth rallies, ministering in several churches, distributing tracts, and doing work projects.

Why are we going:

We are going to the Dominican Republic to reach people with the Gospel, fulfilling the Great Commission, encouraging and edifying the body of believers at Iglesia Baputista Cristiama Church.  The church is looking forward to meeting you and ministering with you again!  The Dominicans are very friendly people, so don’t be afraid to interact with them.  They love to speak and work on their English so don’t be afraid!

Spiritual Conditions:

The Dominican Republic is a very religious island with Catholicism being the primary religion.  The churches we will be ministering in have some wonderful Christian people.  The excitement of you coming from the states to minister will encourage them to walk daily with the Lord.  There are thousands of unsaved people in the Dominican Republic and your willingness to go will allow opportunities for you to share the truth of the Gospel.

Dates:

We will be departing from the church on Thursday, July 29th and will take a bus to Chicago O’hare airport.  We will be returning to Chicago on Sunday, August 8th.

Cost:

The cost for the trip is $650.00 and this covers your airfare, transportation to Chicago, transportation on the island, and all meals in the Dominican.  There will be time to shop for souvenirs so plan accordingly.  Fifty to seventy-five dollars should be enough for extras.

Passport Information:

A passport is needed to travel.  Once you have your passport, please give it to Mrs. Thompson.  She will keep all of them in one place for us.  Thank you for your help in this matter.

Luggage:

You may have one bag that does not weigh more than 50 pounds and a carry-on that cannot weigh more than 40 pounds.

Living Accommodations:

We will be staying at a home that will provide separate living quarters for the young men and ladies.  We will eat breakfast at the house in the morning, lunch will usually be fast food, and then dinner will be provided for us by people from the church.  Please be grateful with the food that we are served.  We anticipate no health issues with the food or the environment.  We encourage washing of hands as much as possible.

Speaking:

Although most of the people speak Spanish, there will be many young people that can speak English.  Do your best in your communication.  We must all make an effort to really listen and if you don’t understand ask someone who can help in the translation process.  Dr. Thompson and Pst. Rick will be the official interpreters of the group.

Emergency Information:

The number for the church where we are working with is 809-537-5645.  The cell phone for Pst. Roberto is 809-399-5921.  And Pastor Steve’s cell is 262-424-7174.

Witnessing:

We want everyone to be comfortable in sharing the Gospel.   Most people there would say they are “saved” so do not start with asking them if they are saved.  Please ask the Lord to give you opportunities to give the Gospel.

Potential:

This trip has great potential to change your life and the eternal destiny of many.  High Risk – High Impact.

Dress:

Ladies: The principle that you will hear often is that of modesty.  We would like for the ladies to be in a dress for Sunday services.  For youth rallies, a blouse and skirt would be fine, unless other wise told.  All tops should be modest and the length of dresses or skirts should come to the knee.  If there is a question, please ask early and ask either Mrs. Helm or Mrs. Thompson.

There will be swimming opportunities.  Please have a one piece swim suit with a dark t-shirt and athletic shorts worn over the swim suit.

For VBS you may wear knee length shorts or capri’s.  Sleeveless t-shirts are fine but make sure the width of the t-shirt covers the shoulder.  Anything not modest will be addressed, please comply quickly and graciously.  Immodest dress will be quickly taken care of.

Men:  The principle of modesty is also one that will be emphasized for men.  For Sunday services, please have a shirt and tie with nice slacks.  Please no tennis shoes for Sunday services.  For youth rallies, a collared shirt and Dockers or cargo pants would be fine.  During VBS, knee length shorts are fine, (no athletic shorts) with a nice t-shirt or collared shirt.  Please wear socks and shoes.  No sandals for the guys are permitted for the services or Bible school.  When swimming please have modest swim trunks and a t-shirt.  A sleeveless t-shirt will be fine.
