Thirsting for God

I have been reflecting on why we should have a "thirst for God"?  The Lord guided me to a familiar passage of Scripture found in Psalm 42 when David penned the words, "As the deer pants for the water, so my soul longeth after You."  In this passage, David paints a vivid picture of how his soul thirsted for the living God as much as a thirsty deer pants for streams of fresh water.

In reading these verses I had to ask myself a few important questions and the first was: Why should I thirst for God?

There are two thoughts that I have concerning this question and the first conclusion I came to was that God is all-sufficient!  The Lord is the source of all that I need.  Habakkuk 3:17-18 says, "Though the fig tree may not blossom nor fruit be on the vines though the labor of the olive may fail and the fields yield no food, though the flock may be cut off from the fold and no herd in the stalls, yet i will rejoice in the Lord I will joy in the God of my salvation, the Lord is my strength."  In spite of terrible circumstances, Habakkuk can rejoice.  A lot of times my joy rises and falls with my circumstances!

When we read about joy in the Bible, David and many others who spoke of such joy in their God say Him do great things.  They saw answers to prayer, victory over enemies, the providence of God, and miracles.  The reality of seeing God's power and glory brought them joy!  We will find joy in our lives when He becomes real in our lives.  Not only does God supply Joy but He also brings many other blessings such as:

Peace - Isaiah 26:3 "You will keep him in perfect peace, whose mind is stayed on You!
Wisdom - James 1:5 "If anyone lacks wisdom let him ask of God who gives to all men..."
Spiritual Fruit - John 15:4 - Christ describes Himself as the vine that enables the branches to bear fruit!
Power and Strength - John 15:5 - "I am the vine and you are the branches, whoever abides in me bears much fruit for without me you can do nothing!"
Eternal Life - John 3:16

After browsing through the Scripture and focusing on all these things that God gives me, boy I was pumped to get to know more about Him!  I began to thirst!  Which told me that when I have the right focus on God and God alone in my life I do thirst for Him!

He is not only all-sufficient but also all-surpassing!

None can compare to our God!  As John said of Christ, we could fill the world with books on His glory and still not scratch the surface or Who He is and What He is like!  Our God is Great!
